Laugh Riot Quentin Tarantino Wants To Make A Comedy

Now the guy behind Once Upon a Time in Hollywood apparently “wants to make a comedy.” Tarantino has an idea for something which won’t be his next movie — which likely won’t end up being that R-rated Star Trek sequel (presumably set on the Planet of the Barefoot People) either. While accepting an award at the Rome film festival, Tarantino claimed that he wants to make a wacky Spaghetti Western in which the comedy is largely derived from racially tone-deaf casting. According to Tarantino: “the Mexican bandido is an Italian; the hero is an American; the bad sheriff is a German; the Mexican saloon girl is Israeli.” And they’re all “speaking a different language.”

Which sounds … terrible? Yeah, it’s true that a lot of the classic Spaghetti Westerns cast white people in non-white roles, and the actors often spoke a variety of languages, but that seems like a terrible aspect of the genre to latch onto. And if it is intended as some kind of ironic critique of cinematic whitewashing, we would strongly recommend someone other than Quentin Tarantino for the job.
