Seriously, it does not matter what age you were when you started watching Friends, even if it was last year, because one look at Matthew Perry’s disheveled, sunken face, and suddenly you have an urge to go coffin shopping on Etsy. It’s not even that the cast has aged poorly so much as it’s that over 16 years have passed since the last time a new episode of Friends was aired. That’s a hell of a time capsule, and there’s just something particularly humbling about it. Seeing the cast hamming it up on Monica’s couch as they did in 2004 feels like trying on your old wedding dress from fifteen years ago. It’s not going to fit the same, and even if it does, something is still going to feel off.

That said, this isn’t actually going to be an episode of Friends in the classic sense. (Which is a shame because Gunther and Phoebe truly do deserve a shot at love.) It’s more of a hangout hosted by James Cordon where the cast and crew revisit the old sets and take a look at behind-the-scenes footage. It’s probably the right call for all sorts of reasons, the least of which is that a laugh track is seen as out of date by modern audiences, and we all know how awkward Friends can be without a laugh track.
